Assistant Controller
The Accounting Department supports the product, people, promotion, place, and profit strategies of the company by providing centralized delivery of all financial services. Internally, Accounting provides financial services to all divisions of the company. Externally, Accounting provides financial information and reporting to the parent company, Berkshire Hathaway, as well as state and federal regulatory agencies. The Accounting Department is divided into four areas: (1) General Accounting, which includes financial reporting, fixed assets, financial system integration, and treasury management; (2) Inventory Control, which includes inventory accounting and merchandise payables; (3) Accounts Payables, which includes expense payables and travel processing; and (4) Payroll, which includes all payroll and bonus processing and payroll tax reporting.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Controller manages accounting activities in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, Helzberg’s corporate policies/procedures, and Berkshire Hathaway policies/procedures for the accounting function including Inventory Accounting, Merchandise Payables, and Inventory Control. In addition to the accounting functions, this role will be the primary point of contact for ESG compliance and reporting. This associate is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Helzberg policies/procedures and internal controls to maintain compliance, while driving continuous improvement in our processes.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Oversee inventory-related financial reporting to ensure accurate financial information is reported and is available to company management personnel for use in the decision-making process and reporting to our ownership.
- Oversee merchandise accounts payable to ensure that payments are processed within Helzberg’s and Berkshire Hathaway’s financial policies, procedures, and government regulations.
- Oversee the bi-annual physical inventory counts in store and the distribution center, and the processing of all resulting adjustments timely.
- Shepherd updates and enhancements to the merchandise system and inventory accounting/payables processes.
- Identify opportunities to reduce expenses and improve profitability.
- Primary accounting contact for merchandise and distribution center leadership.
- Ensure ESG reporting compliance with federal and state standards.
- Supervise and review general ledger account reconciliations in support of financial reporting accuracy.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will directly supervise the Inventory Control Manager and oversee six finance associates reporting to the Inventory Control Manager, which include professional staff accountants and clerical associates. This position will be responsible for the following:
- Accomplish department objectives by directing and monitoring work progress of direct report and team.
- Provide coaching and guidance to direct report and team.
- Set expectations, annual goals and provide required quarterly touch base meetings with all direct reports.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- CPA or master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related area and a minimum of seven years of increasing experience in financial reporting, financial systems, budgeting and policy development or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A combination of public and corporate accounting is desired.
- Significant experience in supervising and developing a finance staff is required.
- Experience in enterprise-wide accounting information systems is required. Oracle Cloud ERP experience is strongly preferred.
- Technical aptitude and ability to not only use systems and tools but to understand how data flows and calculations within the systems.
- Superior analytical, interpersonal communication, and project management skills are required.
- Hybrid schedule with predictable onsite attendance required three or more days per week to perform essential functions involving interactive behaviors with co-workers and managers, operation or manipulation of equipment and/or materials located only on site, and direct interaction with internal and/or external customers.
